On June 2nd 2024 at the MRV arena, athletes from Atlético Maneiro and Bahia came together not to compete against each other but to fight against global warming. Sponsored by the initiative “Together for the Planet,” the event aimed to raise awareness of the impact of global warming on our planet in honor of World Environment Day.
As the match began, players from each team walked onto the field holding a soccer ball made of ice. The ball, meant to symbolize the globe, remained on the field as they played. As the game progressed, the ball melted, symbolizing the effects that global warming is having on our planet. In addition to this demonstration, the players wore a patch on their shirts to further promote the motto of the Together for the Planet campaign.
The “Together for the Planet” campaign also created a film showcasing the melting ice ball. The film will emphasize that there is still time to halt global warming but that it is our responsibility to act.
Campaign Initiatives
The campaign’s most recent initiative aims to help the victims of the tragedy in Rio Grande do Sul. They are donating $400,000 Reais to help support the victims and to help raise awareness. The tragedies that are occurring in Brazil should be seen as a reason to keep on fighting for our planet and to conquer climate change.
In its commitment to the cause, the MRV Arena also works with the initiative by implementing sustainability projects. They recently introduced a rainwater reuse system to their facilities. They also participate in an annual planting of 46,000 seedings in Belo Horizonte parks, mirroring the stadium’s seating capacity.
