Barren lands on the outskirts of Ahmedabad and a lack of trees within the city are disrupting the ecological balance. This imbalance is leading to irregular rainfall, higher temperatures in summer, and fluctuating weather during winter. To address this environmental issue, 1.5 lakh trees will be planted in Ahmedabad and the Detroj district. The initiative, launched on Saturday, is expected to be completed by March 2025.
To support this effort for a better climate in the city, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has partnered with the NGO Bal Bharti Academy, which works in the field of environmental conservation. The campaign, titled “#एक_पेड़_माँ_के_नाम (#Plant4Mother),” is gaining momentum as more people join the initiative.
1.5 Lakh Trees for Tamil Nadu
This ambitious project aims to plant 3,00,000 native tree species across Ahmedabad and Detroj districts in Gujarat and Sivaganga district in Tamil Nadu, marking a significant step toward environmental conservation.
As part of ONGC’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts, the initiative focuses on rejuvenating degraded community lands in these regions. Each location will see 10-acre plots dedicated to planting and maintaining 1,50,000 saplings in Gujarat and another 1,50,000 in Tamil Nadu.
Scheduled for completion by March 2025, the project includes a three-year care and maintenance plan to ensure the survival and growth of the trees. This effort will transform barren landscapes into lush green spaces, advancing India’s climate action goals while enhancing rural livelihoods.
Maninder Singh, Secretary of Bal Bharti Academy, shared his thoughts on the initiative: “This collaboration with ONGC goes beyond tree planting-it’s about nurturing a sustainable future. By ensuring these trees thrive, we aim to create lasting benefits for local communities and contribute significantly to combating climate change.”
Action for a greener planet
The partnership leverages Bal Bharti Academy’s expertise in large-scale environmental projects and ONGC’s commitment to sustainability, forming a dynamic collaboration. Together, they aspire to inspire collective action for a greener planet under the shared vision of the #Plant4Mother initiative.
The plantation drive will conclude by March 2025, with ongoing community engagement and ecological monitoring extending through 2028. This initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and supports national programs like the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) and Mission LiFE.
