The alliance also aims to expand youth participation in sports activities and strengthen ethics and transparency in sports.
The ESG Alliance was announced by Korea Sports Promotion Foundation (KSPO) CEO Cho Hyun-jae during an event to mark the 35th anniversary of the 1988 Seoul Olympics.
“It is very meaningful to form the Korea Sports ESG Alliance at the 35th anniversary of the Seoul Olympics Games 1988,” Cho said in a press release. “With this declaration, we will take the lead in creating a better world through sports.”
The alliance includes sports associations, universities, academic bodies, and small sports companies. It is the latest in a series of initiatives by Korean sports organisations to reduce their environmental impact and promote sustainability.
The creation of the alliance comes as Seoul prepares to bid to host the 2036 Summer Olympics. If Seoul wins the bid, it would be the third time that Korea has hosted the Summer Olympics, after 1988 and 2018.
The Korea Sports ESG Alliance is a significant step forward for Korean sports. It demonstrates the commitment of the Korean sports community to sustainability and social responsibility.
The alliance’s goals of achieving net zero carbon emissions, expanding youth participation in sports, and strengthening ethics and transparency in sports are all admirable. The alliance is well-positioned to make a positive impact on Korean society and the global sports community.
